CHATHAM COUNTY NC

As for Robert Moseley's move to Chatham County, NC, the following deeds from there are relevant.

November 14, 1783 - James Bell of Chatham County, NC to Robert Moslee of Chatham County, NC for 200 pounds 500 acres land in Chatham on the north side of the Haw River. Witnesses - Gray Barber?, George Edwards, John Bynum. (Book C - page 144)

November 1, 1785 - James Bell of Wilkes County, GA to Joseph Bell of Chatham County, NC for 243 pounds 243 acres land on the north side of the Haw River including an island granted Benjamin Clemons in 1758. Witnesses - James Sellars, Robert Moseley. (Book D - page 201)

September 28, 1785 - James Bell of Wilkes County, GA to Isaac Bynum of Chatham County, NC for 30 pounds 137 acres on both sides of Cub Creek which said Bell bought of John Morgan where Isaac Bynum now lives. Witnesses - William Bynum, William Richardson, Herbert Haines. (Book F - page 84)

When Robert Moseley sold his land in Chatham County, NC in 1785, he removed to Wilkes County, GA where his son-in-law James Bell had already relocated. From the family history Key and Allied Families by Mrs. Julian C. Lane (1931), page 360, we find information on the Bell family. Here it is stated "Joseph Bell married Mary Bynum. Their son James Bell born in North Carolina Oct 4, 1747, died in Elbert Co., GA, Aug 23, 1809, m. Olive Mosley born in North Carolina July 4, 1761, died in Elbert Co., GA, Oct 2, 1822. She was the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth (Dennis) Mosley." This book goes on to list all of James and Olive Bell's children with exact birthdates so it is presumed to have come from some family record although no source is given. From the will and estate records of Richard Burnett in Brunswick County, VA above, it appears that Robert Moseley's wife was Elizabeth. This is confirmed by a deed found in Elbert County, GA made 1798.

When Robert Moseley, Sr. arrived in Wilkes (later Elbert) County, GA probably in early 1786, his sons had apparently all reached maturity as they began obtaining land grants and making deeds at a prolific rate. This has caused much of the confusion between Robert Moseley, Sr. and his son Robert, Jr. whose wife was Sarah. However, the following deeds from Elbert and Putnam County, GA are all that can be attributed to Robert Moseley, Sr.

January 19, 1796 - Henry and Polley Moseley to Benjamin Moseley, all of Elbert County, GA, for 100 pounds 200 acres on Falling Creek adjoining Henry Moseley, Robert Moseley and Basil Lamar (when surveyed) granted to Robert Moseley, Jr. on Sept 24, 1788 conveyed to John Wilkins and from Wilkins to Henry Moseley. Wit James Bell, JP and Robert Moseley, Sr. (Book G - Page 102)

July 18, 1798 - Robert Mosely and Elizabeth, his wife, to Shelton White, all of Elbert County, for $600, 220 acres on Falling Creek bounded by William B. Key, James Bell, Middleton Wosas?, Henry Moseley and sold Robert Moseley, the same whereon Lewis Moseley now lives. Wit: James Bell, Lewis Moseley. Signed: Robert RM Moseley (his mark) Elizabeth X Moseley (her mark). (Book E - page 71)

January 3, 1804 - Benjamin Cook and Delilah, his wife, to Robert Moseley, Senr. (all of Elbert County) for $600 205 acres on both sides of Beaverdam Creek bounded by Richardson Hunt and John Bray part of a double bounty granted to Thomas Carter. Wit: Elijah Moseley, John Bray. Signed: Benjamin Cook Delilah X Cook (her mark). (Book J - page 32)

May 28, 1808 - Robert Moseley of Elbert County to Elijah Moseley of Putnam County for $1,000, 205 acres in Elbert County on Beaverdam Creek bounded by R. Hunt and John Bray part of a double bounty granted to Thomas Carter. Wit: Daniel Parnall, Lewis Moseley, Henry Moseley. Signed: Robert X Moseley (his mark). (This deed recorded in Putnam County Book A - page 174)

It is probable that after this sale in May, 1808, Robert Moseley, Sr. moved in with his son Elijah in Putnam County, GA where he died shortly thereafter. By this time, he was making his mark as an "X" indicating he was old and infirm.

In February, 1808, Elijah Moseley joined the membership of Crooked Creek Baptist Church in Putnam County, GA where he was the sometime pastor.

The church minutes also show that on December 24, 1808, Robert Moseley joined this church. The membership here would eventually include Elijah Moseley and wife Susannah (joined May, 1808), Lewis Moseley (joined March, 1813) and Benjamin and Mary (Parnell) Moseley (joined Feb and April, 1818).

The church minutes also record the dismissals of Lewis Moseley in January, 1820 and "brother Benjamin Mosely & Mary his wife and also brother Elijah Mosely and Susannah W. Mosely his wife" in September, 1820. The church minutes do not show a dismissal for Robert Moseley and his name is not on the membership list for August, 1820 indicating he died while a member of the church.
